Academy Award Nominations

The list for the 2009 Academy Awards has been published. While I don’t believe that this particular list is a great one, it’s a useful starting point for the movies that are either vastly popular or pretty good. I only pay attention to the following five categories:

  1. Best Picture
  2. Best Actor in a Lead Role
  3. Best Actress in a Lead Role
  4. Best Actor in a Supporting Role
  5. Best Actress in a Supporting Role

I continue to track which of these movies I have seen  in a file that I update every year, for all movies going all the way back to 1929.  It’s a pretty awesome list, and there are plenty of early years I have yet to see a single movie.  But it gives me a way to find movies I might otherwise not see, especially in the years long before I was able to see them.

This year there are 15 movies that take up those 25 slots.  They are:

  1. Doubt (4)
  2. Curious Case of Benjamin Button (3)
  3. Milk (3)
  4. Frost/Nixon (2)
  5. Reader, The (2)
  6. Wrestler, The (2)
  7. Changeling (1)
  8. Dark Knight, The (1)
  9. Frozen River (1)
  10. Rachel Getting Married (1)
  11. Revolutionary Road (1)
  12. Slumdog Millionaire (1)
  13. Tropic Thunder (1)
  14. Vicky Cristina Barcelona (1)
  15. Visitor, The (1)

I have already seen 11 of them, which is better than I have managed in the past.

I can’t say I’ve seen enough to declare anything in particular, but I’m sad not to see Synecdoche, NY in this list anywhere.  I think that’s a real shame.
